If you have seen one square you have not seen them all

Savannah, GA  March 23 - 30, 2013

We left Brunswick on a rainy morning to make our way Savannah, GA.  This city has been on my bucket list ever since I read In the Garden of Good and Evil and it was every bit as wonderful as I was expecting.  We arrived at the Whispering Pines RV park which was nice and wide open and drove into our pull-thru site without incident.  It tended to fill up in the afternoon with snow-birds making their way home to Ontario, Ohio, Pennsylvania, etc. and then clear out in the morning.  It was very quiet and lots of room for the dogs to run.  It was about 17 miles to downtown Savannah and seemed a perfect location.

I had been hoping that I would be able to see my cousin Mark's son Justin pitch in a college baseball game at Georgia Southern University.  He had a home series this weekend, but he is never really sure when he is going to pitch.  There was lots of rain that weekend so all three games were delayed at various times.  We went ahead and took the chance and drove the 40 miles to Statesboro hoping that he would pitch.  He is their star pitcher in his senior year and we were excited to get a chance to see him.  We knew he wasn't going to start the game so we arrived at the top of the second inning.  GSU was winning and we sat with my cousin Mark, his wife Julie and their youngest son Ethan.  We sat right behind home plate so that my dad could see us on the televised game.  We all waved at the camera for him - he loved it!  We got very excited when Justin went out to the bullpen to warm up, and sure enough they brought him in to pitch in the 3rd inning!  It was fabulous to watch him and very nerve-wracking.  He pitched a great game only giving up one run and striking out several.  They pulled him out in the ninth inning to let the closer finish off the win.  We stayed a few minutes after the game to say hi and bye.  It was great fun and so glad it worked out.  My cousin has a beautiful family!

One Monday we planned to meet up with MaryKay and Greg in downtown Savannah to take one of the trolley tours of downtown Savannah.  We drove the BAT (Big Ass Truck) downtown to their "free parking" lot.  They made one of us go inside to purchase trolley tickets before they informed us that their lot was full.  They directed us to a building across the street with a green awning that we had to make a U-turn to get to.... the BAT needs three lanes to make a U-turn.  UGH!  We pull into the green awning to find that it is a valet only entrance for the hotel and not the public parking lot at all.  After a few frustrating minutes, we backed up out of there back onto the street to continue to the next building for the public lot.  The entrance says 8'2" clearance, but then there is a sign that says 7' clearance.  We enter the structure and loop around finding no spaces on the first floor and the second floor is where the ceiling lowers to 7'.  We are about 7' 2" UGH again.  We leave that structure to try to find another public lot driving in circles.  We finally find a spot on the street where we literally pulled up on the curb to be sure we were out of the traffic.  After an hour of frustration we finally get on the trolley with the Crouches.  The tour took us all over the historic district and around many of the squares that fill Savannah.  It was a great way to get an overview of the city and learn some history.  We wandered around the City Market and went to a great spot for some good old southern cooking.  I had shrimp and cheese grits (YUM), Peg had crab chowder and shrimp, MK had a fried green tomato BLT, and Greg had alligator sausage sub.  We then had to head back to our truck and home to the dogs.  It was another visit with MK and Greg and we miss them so much.  I wish we could meet friends at every stop!

We used the next couple of days to get our taxes done and some much needed shopping and laundry time.  Then we took another day and went back to Savannah to walk the town Architectural tour written up in the guide book.  We started at the visitor center and then walked the entire district to see all of the different kinds of architecture and most of the 19 squares throughout the area.  It was a great day!  We also hit the Colonial Park Cemetery and the antique row where we perused the beautiful antique bars and decided we had to have one.  Good thing they were  35k and we didn't have our check book on us!  :)

We decided to use our last day to drive over to Tybee Island, the barrier island off the coast.  We parked by the beach and rode our bikes along a marked route that took us all over the island and to the lighthouse on the other end.  It was a great ride through the great beach community and historic homes.  We only got off the route a few times, but luckily it is a very small island so we couldn't get too lost.  I thought riding thru flat lands was the best until I realized without any uphills there are no downhills to coast thru!  A little uphill effort is worth it.

Savannah is a great city and was a great stop!  Now for a couple of housekeeping issues.  I neglected to thank our new friends Don and Sue for our new laundry hanging assembly.  We love it - thanks!

And here are several pictures from MK of our Brunswick visit that I had to post.... does she always have to look so beautiful?

Coming soon... Charleston, SC and Atlanta, GA
