We had a blast!

Mt St Helens, WA Oct 21 - 25

We arrived at Mt St Helens RV park and are given a beautiful campsite that overlooks Silver Lake with a wide open grass area.  A gorgeous panoramic view.  Peg saw her first Bald Eagle in the wild and was very excited.  We played lots of chuck it in the rain.

We had been told by everyone not to miss the Mt St Helen's visitor center and it turns out there are three of them.  One at the base near our campground, one further up the mountain and the last one at the top of the mountain at 4600' elevation.  We braved the snow and drove to the top even though the mountain was not visible.  At the end of the movie, the curtains are pulled up and a huge set of windows are supposed to show the spectacular mountain, but all we saw was white.  Disappointed we started through the exhibits, when a man says "there she is" and we turn around to see the clouds had lifted just enough that we could see the snow covered crater.  It was worth the 30 mile drive in the snow.  The magnitude of the damage done by one relatively small eruption was mind boggling.  Most of the damage was done by the land-slide and the lahar's (mud-flow).  The landscape will never be the same.  And she is still cooking....scary!
